Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a resurfacing technique used by Dr. Levine that is effective in smoothing out deep lines and wrinkles and scars caused by acne, accidents or a previous surgery. It can also be used to remove brown spots, precancerous growths called actinic keratoses, and some tattoos.
Dr. Levine performs dermabrasion under local anesthetic. It involves the mechanical abrasion of the upper layers of the skin to improve its contour. With dermabrasion, a new layer of skin replaces the abraded skin during healing, resulting in a smoother appearance.
For tattoos, Dr. Levine abrades the skin to a level that exposes the ink. The remaining tissue along with the ink builds into a scab, which remains for about a week as new skin grows. When the scab comes off, the pigment from the tattoo is removed with it.
